It won't. The record companies have dropped all support for Static &
Silence and that includes singles. Although I don't understand this
because we were also told that the band may tour this Summer. As I
understood it, tours are also considered support for releases but maybe
this one isn't that and they (the band, management and the labels) feel
that we deserve to see them live again to atone for the years of
abandonment. Yeah right.

Subject: My Poll results

Juuuust in case anyone is interested in reading the results of my little
Arithmetic poll, here they are. There really were no surprises but
there are some interesting results...

The Arithmetics voted:

1.) Which is the Sundays' "worst" song? [I've listed the songs with
the greatest number of votes first.]

None whatsoever (1 vote)

Your Eyes (won by far!)

(the rest only got one vote each)

A Certain Someone
God Made Me
Hideous Towns
I Can't Wait

greatest number of votes first.]

Here's Where the Story Ends (close second)
You're Not the Only One I Know (close third)
Blood On My Hands
I Won
Don't Tell Your Mother

3.) Which is the Sundays' "best" album?

4.) Which is the Sundays' "worst" album?

Static and Silence (another landslide)
None/Blind (tie)
RWA (two votes)

5.) At this point, do you feel that the future of the band is bright
     or bleak?

Bright (basically everyone says "bright as long as they don't wait so
long to release another LP")
Bleak (six votes)

6.) On RWA, at the time, did you think that David was trying to
     play like Johnny Marr?

It was close but "yes" won by a ratio of 10 to 7.

7.) Pick one guitarist that Harriet would be better or more
     interesting with than David.

the Edge/Johnny Marr (tie)
"Me" got three votes

(the rest with one vote each)

Tuck Andress (Tuck & Patti)
Simon Austin (Frente)
Bernard Butler
David Gilmore
Robin Guthrie
James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins)

8.) Pick one singer that David might be better or more interesting
     with than Harriet.

Morrissey (won by far)
Karen Peris (the Innocence Mission)/Nina (the Cardigans) (tie)

(the rest with one vote each)

Brett Anderson
Bjork
Cilla Black
Andrea Corr of the Corrs
Ian Curtis (Joy Division)
Mary Fahl
Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
Toni Halliday

"Keyboard Chick from New Order"
John Lydon
Madonna
Sarah McLachlan
Brad Roberts (Crash Test Dummies)
Hope Sandoval
Sinead O'Connor
the singer from McCarthy
Dean Wareham (Luna)
Thom Yorke

9.) Harriet Wheeler - sex appeal or no sex appeal? [Think about
     this one and be honest]

Sex appeal won by a ratio of 20 to 7

Plus one gay male says that Harriet's got so much sex appeal, even HE's
attracted to her.

10.) David Gavurin - sex appeal or no sex appeal?

11 people said that he's got no sex appeal. 7 of you said that he does
have sex appeal. Most of you gave the "I don't want to say because I'm
afraid people will think I'm homosexual" answer.

11.) Harriet Wheeler & David Gavurin - as individuals (not as the
     Sundays), piss boring or misunderstood?

All got votes, but "misunderstood" won by far.

12.) Harriet Wheeler - not very bright or just underestimated?

This one incited all sorts of responses from "what?!" to "..." but
"underestimated" won by far.

13.) Do you think the Sundays sound will develop more or have they
     found their "sound"?

"Develop more" won by a ratio of 10 to 4.

14.) Which band absolutely MUST cover a Sundays tune? Which band and
which tune? [I just listed your choices. Some got more than one
vote but I kept the list in alphabetical order by the artists' last
names.]

Air Miami -- You're not the only one that I know
Erykah Badu -- Medicine
Cocteau Twins -- Turkish, Blood On My Hands
the Corrs -- A Certain Someone
the Cure -- Blood On My Hands, Hideous Towns
Curve -- She
the Durutti Column -- Skin & Bones
Juliana Hatfield -- I Kicked a Boy, Another Flavour
Innocence Mission -- anysongtheywanted
Jewel -- Folk Song, 24 Hours
Mary Lou Lords -- Folk Song
Mazzy Star -- Here's Where the Story Ends, Joy
Natalie Merchant -- Summertime
Morrissey -- Cry, Love
My Bloody Valentine -- On Earth, Goodbye
Beth Orton -- Folk Song
Pavement -- Goodbye
Portishead -- Love, Joy
Red House Painters -- any tune
Sonic Youth -- What do you think?, I Kicked a Boy
the Stone Roses -- Don't Yell Your Mother
the Verve -- I Feel

15.) Who has the better voice, Thom Yorke or Harriet Wheeler?

Both got votes but Harriet won by a landslide. One person voted "me".
(laughs)

16.) Should the Sundays support the Wu-Tang Clan on their next tour?

It was close but most of you voted "yes". Although most of the "yes"
answers also went on to say how horrible it'd be. A lot of you chose
not to answer this question. I don't blame you. It was a pretty
fucking stupid question to ask.

17.) If Harriet Wheeler and Toni Halliday (Curve) suddenly acquired
equal superhuman strength and fought, who would win?

Strangely enough, we've a tie! One person voted "Sarah McLachlan". I
thought that was funny.

18.) Do you prefer David's monotune acoustic strumming & jangle of old
(Here's Where the Story Ends, Can't Be Sure, Medicine) or his
newer electric muscle (Another Flavour, So Much)?

Both received votes but David's jangle of old murdered the other
choice. A couple of you made me realize that I completely overlooked
the atmospheric guitar from Blind. That's true. Strangely, that's my
preference as well. I must've forgotten. Sorry about that.

19.) Do you feel that the Sundays "owe" it to their fans to do more
shows? If no, do you feel that they've ANY "obligation" at all
to their fans who've stuck by them, some from as far back as '89?

It was close but most of you voted that they do NOT owe we beleaguered
fans a thing. ...I also think one or two of you said you wouldn't care
if Harriet shit on your heads either. ...er, :)

20.) Which are your favorite Sundays song lyrics?

You're Not the Only One I Know (won by a landslide)
Summertime
Goodbye/I Feel/Life Goes On/My Finest Hour (tie)

(all the rest with one vote each)

Blood On My Hands
Can't Be Sure
Cry
Homeward
I Kicked a Boy
Joy
Monochrome
On Earth
So Much

21.) What's your favorite line from a Sundays song? [I believe a few of
you got some lyrics incorrect but Patrick, I agree with you! I still
say it's "job"! I'd argue with HARRIET on this!! :) ]

"Just give me an easy life and a peaceful death." (multiple votes)
"Just give me an easy live and a peaceful day. Yeah! Yeah!"
"if i had anything in the world for free, I wouldn't share it with
anyone else but me"
"i keep hoping you are the same as me......."
"So kill me with love"
"Hell on my own, hell here on my own"
"so, we drove out west to the seaside and we gladly decided to stay
but after two hours wandering outside, the sea air drove them away"
"two peas in the same pod, yes we are, have i read to much fiction, or
is this how it happens?"
"you live and you learn you're invisible"
"I keep hoping you are the same as me and I'll send you letters and
come to your house for tea"
"the finest hour, i've ever known, was finding a pound in the
underground"
"Laughingly I take the fevered applause of the people by the riverside/
I'm walking, walking on water/ God knows why"
"You've stolen my heart, and it hurts me to remember"
"river of raincoats and a forest of faces"
"The thought of heaven couldn't drag me from the path when I'm wandering
here alone."
"these days of obsession, delirious & uncertain still & will they always
stay uncertain still?"
"If you do, don't you know, but I don't mind oh no no..."
"Live for a job and the perfect behind."
"Its perfectly fine to sleep in a chair from monday till Saturday"
"those stories were a good read, they were dumb as well"
"Don't go imagining that time is medicine."

22.) Which is your favorite MUSIC (not vocals) in a Sundays song?

Goodbye
Can't Be Sure/Cry/Don't Tell Your Mother/Here's Where the Story
Ends/Joy/She/Summertime/Through the Dark (all tied)

(all the rest with one vote each)

A Certain Someone
Blood On My Hands
Turkish
Wild Horses
You're not the only one I know

23.) Which are your favorite VOCALS (vocal melody) in a Sundays song?

Goodbye
Blood On My Hands
I Won/Nothing Sweet/On Earth/Summertime (tie)
Turkish/24 Hours (tie)

(all the rest with one vote each)

Don't Tell Your Mother
I Feel
I Kicked a Boy
Love
My finest hour
Noise
Through the Dark - "Hellllloooooo..."
When I'm Thinking About You
Wild Horses

24.) Have the Sundays matured, become boring and uninspired or
     neither?

It was very closely split between "Matured" and "Neither". "Uninspired"
received no votes.

25.) On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, please rate each album:
     - Reading Writing and Arithmetic -- average of 8.8
     - Blind -- average 8.7
     - Static & Silence -- average 7.3

It seems that on the whole, the Arithmetics are VERY deeply devoted to
this band which I find a curious thing. Oh well. Most artists dream of
having fans like that. I hope Harriet and David appreciate it more than
it seems they do.
