I've heard them once in Pizza Hut (but I think they were playing the radio), and once in a pub. But the most incredible thing happened last Saturday. Guess where I saw the Summertime video... On CMT ! Yeah, Country Music Television ! No kidding ! Harriet was more beautiful than ever in her mini black overall. She's aging so gracefully (not that she's old !). Now I really wish I had gone to see her in Toronto... And this might be of interest to the UK arithmeticians: the latest issue of Vox comes with a compilation CD that contains Monochrome. For copyright reasons, the CD isn't included in the magazine outside the UK. Grrr..... Exclusively in love with Harriet, Bob. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tour Dates & Info ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date: Fri, 19 Dec 1997 15:33:10 -0500 From: Craig Parker Subject: Latest US Chart Info First, here's the US chart info for Static & Silence from the Dec. 27th,1997 issue of Billboard: Top 200 Albums chart: drops 19 spots to #199 in it's 12th week. I don't have time for it but I will start by defending Summertime to the best of my abilities since it is probably the best known song off of S&S because of it's airplay. Again, this is only my interpretation so the rest of you might think I'm talking complete shit. The song is about falling in love but more sort of that youngish, inexperienced sort of love. It opens with that tentative, bubbly sort of instrumentation before kicking into me drum beat. During the first verse, the speaker is asking that age old question, "What is love?" by asking "Do some people wind up with the ones that they adore?" She's talking to herself. The way Harriet sings is a sort of a low, mumbley, steam of consciousness style. Then in the chorus, with a burst of brass, she is immediately launched into the present situation. "And it's you and me in the summertime, we'll be hand in hand down in the park. With a squeeze and a sigh and that twinkle in your eye and the sunshine banishes the dark". This is what's going on in the real world and it's exciting and new and happy--hence the use of the horns in the orchestration. Then it returns to the tentative, subdued tones as she asks herself about unhappy couples and the line about "All I can see is films where colorless despair meant angry young men with immaculate hair" accurately reflects how confused we can all get when getting into a relationship because Hollywood and the media gives us a distorted view of how romance should be (a sentiment later echoed in the line, "Or have I read too much fiction...is this how it happens?" At the next section, we hear a rising and falling of the guitar as the singer begins to make her mind up about the relationship "Get up a voice inside says there's not time for looking down, only a pound a word and your'e talking to the town, but how do you coin a phrase that will set your soul apart just to touch a lonely heart" She realizes that she is lonely and she might as well get involved rather than lose out even though there's a risk. So now that her decision is made, the horns return with a more positive force when she repeats the chorus. She's still unsure of the relationship by the end when she's asking "Is this how it happens?" which is reinforced by the presence of the sliding guitar. I think the words along with the music, present some wonderfully evocative images that most people can relate to about a new romance of some sort and the pure bliss along with the doubts that accompany it. As I said earlier I don't know much about music theory or structure, but the sounds of the music wonderfully accompany the words for dramatic effect--something I feel that the Sundays have always done well. I always have strong images in my mind upon hearing their songs and that's what I like about them. When I went to the Sundays show in NY on the 1st I got to meet the band and they all signed a poster that I got on of the staff to give me as he was removing it from the glass case outside. H&D also signed the first foldout of the S&S insert. I scanned them and posted them.
